Love tokens were often given amongst those courting, dating or married for special occasions or before one of the partners would leave on a long trip (war, jobs, etc). In the US, love tokens could be designed at fairs and carnivals, where jewelers would engrave a lover's name into a small coin. When the owner missed their other half they would rub the coin to ease their longing.
